Messi Headlines Club World Cup Opener Amid Tight Security and Electric Atmosphere in Miami

Inter Miami vs Egyptian Giants Al Ahli

Miami, FL – June 15, 2025 — The revamped FIFA Club World Cup kicked off in the United States with a high-profile clash between Inter Miami and Egyptian giants Al Ahly, ending in a goalless draw at the Hard Rock Stadium. The match marked the tournament debut for host city side Inter Miami, led by global football icon Lionel Messi.

Despite the absence of goals, the match delivered plenty of drama and spectacle. Messi, donning the iconic No. 10 shirt, came close to scoring on multiple occasions, including a curling free-kick that rippled the side netting and a long-range strike that was acrobatically tipped onto the crossbar by Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.

Inter Miami’s goalkeeper Oscar Ustari was named man of the match after a series of crucial saves, including a penalty stop, that kept the MLS side in contention.

Security and Spectacle

The event unfolded under a heavy security presence, a response to past incidents such as the chaotic scenes during the Copa America final at the same venue last year. Police patrols, counter-terrorism units, and multiple security checkpoints ensured a controlled environment for the 60,927 fans in attendance—though thousands of seats remained empty in the 65,326-capacity stadium.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, flanked by football legends Ronaldo and Roberto Baggio, had anticipated a full house and a vibrant atmosphere. While the turnout fell short of expectations, the energy from Messi fans and a large contingent of Al Ahly supporters created a lively backdrop.

Opening Ceremony and American Flair

The opening ceremony featured a blend of American pageantry and global football tradition. Students from Miami Dade College presented the crests of the 32 participating clubs, placing them on a giant FIFA display at midfield. Moroccan-American rapper French Montana performed during the pre-match festivities, and each player was introduced individually to the crowd.

Tournament Context

Inter Miami’s qualification for the tournament has been a topic of debate. The team earned its spot by winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield but failed to secure the MLS Cup, leading some critics to argue that LA Galaxy would have been a more deserving representative. However, Miami’s inclusion ensured the presence of Messi, a major draw for fans and broadcasters alike.
Club co-owner Sir David Beckham received a warm welcome from the crowd, and cheers erupted when Messi’s image appeared on the stadium’s big screen.

Looking Ahead

Inter Miami now faces a tougher challenge against Portuguese side FC Porto on Thursday. Head coach Javier Mascherano emphasized the importance of building on the team’s performance.
“Clearly, when we find Leo in positions and get the ball to him in the best way, that’s where we have the most options,” said Mascherano. “We take it game by game. Anything can happen in football.”
The Club World Cup continues with matches scheduled in Los Angeles, Cincinnati, New York/New Jersey, and Seattle, as FIFA aims to establish the tournament as a premier global event on American soil.
