Real Madrid suspend Vinicius Jr contract talks
Real Madrid have suspended contract extension negotiations with Vinicius Jr after the Brazilian winger demanded to become the club's highest-paid player, earning more than recent arrival Kylian Mbappe. The talks, which began earlier this year, have reached an impasse over financial terms that would break the Spanish giants' traditional salary structure.
The contract standoff represents a critical juncture for both player and club, with Vinicius having two years remaining on his current deal and Saudi Arabian clubs reportedly preparing record-breaking offers to lure him away from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Salary Demands Stall Negotiations
According to reports from Diario AS and Jorge Picon of Relevo, Vinicius is seeking between €20-30 million net per season, which would surpass Mbappe's €15 million annual salary. The 25-year-old currently earns approximately €15 million per year under his existing contract that runs until 2027.Real Madrid officials have refused to meet these demands, maintaining their policy of not exceeding €15 million net for any player to avoid potential Financial Fair Play complications. The club's hierarchy reportedly contacted Vinicius' representatives to inform them that negotiations would be postponed until the 2025-26 season.
Ultimatum and Saudi Interest
The Spanish club has reportedly given Vinicius an ultimatum: sign a contract extension by June 2026 or face being sold. This timeline would prevent him from leaving as a free agent when his current deal expires in 2027.
Saudi Pro League clubs, particularly Al-Ahli, have maintained interest in the Brazilian, with reports suggesting offers reaching €350 million for his transfer and a five-year contract worth up to €1 billion. However, recent reports indicate that Saudi interest may have cooled, with no fresh contact since December 2024.
New Era Under Alonso
The contract dispute comes as Real Madrid prepares for what sources describe as a "new era" under incoming manager Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool midfielder is expected to alter the club's internal hierarchy, where players have historically held more influence than the head coach.
Alonso has already warned Vinicius and teammates that increased defensive work rate will be expected. These concerns gained prominence following Vinicius' underwhelming performance at the Club World Cup, where he scored just once and was frequently bypassed defensively.
The standoff highlights the central tension between Vinicius' desire for recognition as the club's premier player and Real Madrid's commitment to fiscal discipline amid evolving team dynamics.
